Design and facilitation of learning for social and organisational change
Jethro’s approach is inclusive and transformative, using critical, reflective, experiential, creative, and embodied methodologies inspired by participatory action learning and feminist pedagogy.
Services may be combined, for example design with facilitation, or face-to-face events blended with virtual learning. Writing of reports and production of high-impact publications can be included.

Facilitation
Creative and inclusive facilitation of retreats, workshops, meetings, strategy reviews, planning sessions and more. One-day or multi-day events. May include agenda design and report.

Action Research
Participatory research processes with social scientists or organisational teams to understand context, analyse power, and identify effective change strategies. May include report writing.

Learning Design
Design and delivery of learning events, courses, trainings and curricula. Short events or longer processes, including distance and practice-based reflective learning, and report writing.

Virtual Learning
Online webinars, e-dialogues, coaching and virtual deep learning, inviting participants to reflect critically on their practice, context, power relations and change strategies.

Power & Integrity
PI is a new initiative that aims to create an enabling environment for the UK non-profit sector, in which organisations can strengthen their integrity practice through power-sensitive leadership and just, inclusive ways of working.

Transformative Health Education
Public health faculty from three Bangladeshi universities are being supported by Jethro and colleagues to develop more hands-on, learner-centred and skill based teaching methods. Transformative Competency-based Public Health Education in Bangladesh’s Health Sector is funded by Erasmus+ (European Union) for three years, with technical support from the Institute of Development Studies and Maastricht University.

Pedagogical Leadership for Africa
Jethro provides program support and quality assurance, with IDS colleagues, for Pedagogical Leadership in Africa (PedaL), a pan-African initiative that promotes transformative, learner-centred and experiential approaches to teaching in the Social Sciences in universities across the continent,. PedaL is funded by the British Council’s Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education Innovation and Reform (SPHEIR). Jethro has designed peer observation and reflective practice methodologies for PedaL’s core faculty training team from five countries.

Citizen Voice & Accountability
Jethro designed and facilitated a 3-day Learning and Inspiration Event in Johannesburg for 60 people from 12 countries as part of the summation of Making All Voices Count – an initiative supporting the use of technologies in citizen engagement and government accountability. Tech innovators, civil society and democracy activists, governance specialists and policy advocates came together to share lessons learned, using diverse and creative methods, in this unique initiative funded by USAID, DFID, Sida and the Omidyar Network.

Safety, Solidarity and Power
How does a human rights network emerge and thrive in a context of closing civic space, growing religious fundamentalism, and violence? Jethro worked with Just Associates staff to document the unique experience of FAMM, a network of young Indonesian women leaders from rural, urban, indigenous, Muslim, Christian, and LBTI backgrounds. A reflective and creative workshop was held in Indonesia, together with storytelling and interviews to gather and share rich data on the evolution of FAMM. Jethro’s report draws lessons from their experience to guide defenders in other contexts.

Power and Biodiveristy
POWERBIODIV is a three year research project exploring the gaps and linkages between power dynamics and stakeholder participation processes in biodiversity conservation worldwide. Jethro serves on a multidisciplinary team of conservation biologists, environmental activists and facilitators who are drawing on diverse sources of knowledge and experience. Supported by the Centre for Synthesis and Analysis of Biodiversity (CESAB), France.

Power analysis in Peacebuilding
Jethro designed and facilitated a 3-day power analysis workshop in Nairobi, Kenya for peacebuilding policy makers and staff from diverse organisations working in fragile and conflicted areas of East Africa and the Horn of Africa. Jethro worked closely with the Life and Peace Institute (Sweden) and wrote a report that contributes to LPI’s Inclusive Peacebuilding project, supported by Sida.

Defending Rights in Hostile Contexts
Jethro co-designed and co-facilitated a 3-day cross-regional learning dialogue and workshop on ‘Defending Rights in Hostile Contexts: Understanding and Confronting the Crackdown against Activists and Civic Space’. Hosted by Just Associates and the Fund for Global Human Rights, the dialogue was attended by 50 diverse and dynamic activists, funders and policy workers from 18 countries, in Johannesburg. Diverse methods, from storytelling to sharing case studies to visual trend mapping, were used to draw out lessons from participants’ experience.

Participation & Equity in Local Governance
As a program advisor for Swiss Development Cooperation in Cuba, Jethro supported the development, monitoring and evaluation of a participatory and inclusive local governance programme in 18 urban and rural municipalities. He worked with SDC country staff and the leaders of 6 Cuban NGOs and University partners, and co-designed and co-facilitated a 2-week training course in participatory monitoring, evaluation and learning methods for Cuban NGO staff.

Power Analysis – A Practical Guide
Researched and written by Jethro for Swedish embassy and Sida field staff around the world, this detailed, step-by-step guide to power analysis is designed to help development program staff and partners understand the contexts in which they are operating, and the forces that enable or constrain social change. Jethro worked closely with a small team of Sida staff to ensure the guide would support Swedish aid priorities and meet the specific needs of embassy personnel around the world.
